Martin Whitmarsh has congratulated the Red Bull team on its first Grand Prix victory. Red Bull Racing, formerly Jaguar and previously Stewart, stormed to its first win in China on Sunday, taking a one-two result with Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber.
"I want to offer our hearty congratulations to all at Red Bull Racing on the occasion of their first Grand Prix win," McLaren team principal Whitmarsh said. "Sebastian drove a great race and well done, too, to our old friend Adrian Newey (car designer). We were never going to be able to live with the Red Bulls or the Brawns today." Red Bull first entered F1 in 2005, with the Austrian drink manufacturer then purchasing the Minardi team, which became Toro Rosso, a year later.
Whitmarsh's McLaren team, which took its first Grand Prix win with founder Bruce McLaren at the wheel in Belgium 41 years ago, also made progress in Shanghai at the weekend by finishing fifth and sixth. "Heikki scored a very well deserved four points for an impressive fifth place," Whitmarsh continued. "It isn't at all easy to drive a faultless race in conditions like those we faced, but Heikki did just that. Lewis pressed hard all afternoon and, when you do that, occasionally you run wide or spin. He duly did so but, in truth, his was a great drive too."
