McLaren will be back, warns Whitmarsh

21 April 2009

Martin Whitmarsh has cautioned other teams not to rest on their laurels after McLaren scored a double points finish in Shanghai on Sunday. The silver cars crossed the line fifth and sixth with Kovalainen and Hamilton, and their team principal sees them being back at the top sooner rather than later.

"There are people out there who are saying the season is over," Whitmarsh told the Evening Standard. "But we can't have that philosophy. We are going to do everything we can to catch up.

"If I was saying this year is over, I don't think that is the type of leadership this team needs, or that Mercedes or any of our partners would expect from us - and it's not what I expect from myself." The team ran a new front wing for both MP4-24 cars in China, with Hamilton also sporting a modified version of the rear diffuser. "From the very first moment we fitted one, we had a performance advantage," Whitmarsh confirmed.
