Haug confused by rivals' KERS decisions

22 April 2009

Mercedes Motorsport boss Norbert Haug is surprised to see other teams opting to use KERS in one session, only to remove it for the next during a race weekend. McLaren, Ferrari, Renault and the BMW of Heidfeld all used the device in Australia and Malaysia, although the Italian and French teams elected not to in China.

McLaren is the only team to have run with KERS on both cars at every race so far; "I'm not criticising anybody, but there have been promoters that are not using it, which is different to what we are doing," Haug said. "We are not punishing ourselves by using it but, for me, it is quite a surprising development when it is brought in for one session, out in another, and whatever.

"I don't want to comment, but in the meantime and on the positive side we improved our market share to 66.6% by using KERS, which is quite remarkable I would say!

"We were not the biggest supporters at the beginning because we wanted to save money, but if a message should be implemented then it should be done in the right way. We got our heads down and I think we have a very good system, probably the benchmark."
