Ferrari misery continues

24 April 2009 / Results / Photos

The Ferrari team continued to struggle in the fourth and final 'flyaway' Friday before returning to Europe, as Felipe Massa and Kimi Räikkönen rounded off the day with sixteenth and eighteenth positions. As the Brazilian was caught looking distinctly downcast in the garage, the Finn was lucky to avoid an accident after a spin in the first session.

With team principal Stefano Domenicali admitting that points finishes must are the target right now, Ferrari is attempting to not endure its worst start to a season in history by failing to score in any of the first four races.

"That was definitely not a good day," Felipe Massa said after practice. "We worked a lot towards the race, but we have to try and improve the handling of the car to move up the order for tomorrow and Sunday. The harder tyre (Medium compound) is very difficult to use, while the soft one (Super Soft) seems to be the best, not just in terms of outright performance but also over a distance." Massa also added that his car would have been slower with the addition of the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS).

"Even if we don't know what fuel loads the other teams had, it's clear that we are not as quick as we would like, but we have to try and make the best of this situation," said Räikkönen, who has openly admitted, since Australia, that the F60 is off the pace. "Today we opted to run in two different configurations and did a lot of work on finding the best setup for the car," he continued. "We collected a lot of data which we will now analyse, to be as well prepared as possible for the race. We can expect a difficult weekend, but we were never in any doubt about that."
