Kubica adapting to KERS

24 April 2009 / Results / Photos

Robert Kubica will be running the KERS device for the first time in a race at Sakhir this weekend, having trialled the device in practice for the Chinese Grand Prix last time out. As one of Formula One's tallest drivers and with KERS onboard, the Pole is driving a heavier car than team-mate Nick Heidfeld.

"It was a usual Friday for us," Robert commented. "We compared the tyre compounds and worked on the car balance. Additionally, we worked on the KERS setup, which is challenging as the temperatures here are quite high." Kubica rounded off the day in 17th position with team-mate Nick Heidfeld 20th. "We will now analyse the data and try to improve for tomorrow," he added.

"As usual we concentrated on race preparation, the tyre comparisons and adapting to KERS," reported head of engineering Willy Rampf. "Last year the field was covered by 4.3 seconds, today it was only 1.4 seconds! So we can assume it will be a very close qualifying tomorrow." Even though the Swiss-German marque is expected to move up the order tomorrow, a repetition of Kubica's 'Pole' position of last year would be highly unlikely.
