Season-best result for Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton was both relieved and satisfied to finish fourth and take five points away from the Bahrain Grand Prix. Ironically, the McLaren driver enjoyed a better race at Sakhir this year than in his title-winning season and, despite not achieving his target of a podium result, was happy to finish in a comfortable fourth place.

Hamilton's successful race in Bahrain began with a super start, making the most of KERS to fly from fifth to second by the first corner before being repassed by Jarno Trulli's Toyota. "Unfortunately, I was not able to keep third place," the World Champion said after the race "Jenson was just so fast through the corners, so he was on my tail all the time."

In contention for second place with Jarno Trulli and Sebastian Vettel for much of the race, Hamilton eventually finished 13 seconds behind the duo after completing his final stint on the less durable Super Soft tyres, which must be used at least once during the race. "I'm delighted with fourth," he continued. "The Toyotas, Red Bulls and Brawns were so fast in the high-speed corners that it was just impossible to keep up, but this is another encouraging step for the team - we just need to keep working on the car because we're not really fighting back quite yet, we are just collecting points."

Lewis added that the gap to those cars in front should increase on a high downforce circuit such as the next race at Barcelona, and that he will be challenging for only a top ten position as a result." Having now scored points for three consecutive races (plus Australia, from which he was disqualified), the reigning World Champion moves to seventh place in the drivers' championship, 22 points behind compatriot and leader Jenson Button.
