Barrichello sees off doubters

27 April 2009

Rubens Barrichello has crushed rumours that he may be replaced by another driver in the Brawn team before the conclusion of the 2009 season. It was the view of many that the Brazilian was heading for retirement at the end of last year, but was re-signed by the newly-bought, ex-Honda team for the start of this year.

"I promise you, you're going to see me for the whole year," he told GPWeek. "Formula 1 has become quite weird in the way that, before the internet, something was true and something was not. Now people all over the world write untrue things and it gets circulated - I don't know why people invented those things. This week I had that rumour, I had Bruno Senna driving my car again - I was going to be sacked. People should concentrate and go back to the truth."

A disappointed Senna said before the start of the season that he had felt let down not to be taken on as Jenson Button's team-mate, although team principal Ross Brawn insisted that the experience and wisdom of Barrichello, who worked with Brawn at Ferrari for six years, was vital for the growth and security of the team.

"It is what I have asked for my whole life," Paulista Barrichello continued, talking of parity among team-mates. "I have had equal terms with every team-mate in the past, other than Michael (Schumacher, at Ferrari), and I couldn't show my true potential in the team, which is why I left. I hoped I could have a good car in another team; I didn't, but now I do again. It's just freedom."
