Most teams will be running with an upgraded car in Spain compared to those chassis they started with in Melbourne over a month ago. At Scuderia Toro Rosso it won't be any different, as the Italian team has announced significant upgrades for Barcelona.

The upcoming weekend welcomes Europe back to Formula 1 for the first time in the 2009 championship. For the Spanish Grand Prix, every team will introduce at least a small number of upgrades to their car. At Toro Rosso the team will introduce a significant change according to chief engineer Laurent Mekies although the team was unable to run any of the upgrades on-track as a result of the new limited testing regulations this season. "Obviously we don't have testing now so we have to understand how the upgrade suits the direction we have taken so far," Mekies said. "Does it push in the same direction or does it ask us to reconsider some of the choices we have made already? Mainly the update is from the developments at Red Bull Technology, carried on from work started in the winter. Significant items of that development programme will reach us in Barcelona, so they are not directly influenced by what we did in the first four races.
"We will see if what we did in the first races, in terms of setup direction, suits the improvements or not."
Mekies also talked about the next race: "The Catalunya track is one of the very few on which we have tested before the start of the season, so it is one of the few tracks for which we have a reference point. It's an aero-track and everybody will run very close to maximum downforce, despite the very long straight, so it is going to be the guys who find the highest amount of downforce who will probably be in a good position."
