Brendon Hartley is attending his first Formula One race in Spain this weekend, having been confirmed as Red Bull's reserve driver after been granted with an F1 super licence. The 20-year-old New Zealander will be on hand for the rest of the season to drive any Red Bull car in the event of regular race drivers being unable to compete.
"I have the super licence now so I'm really really happy to be here to take as much experience as I can," Hartley told the BBC. "Just being here and being in the meetings and see what's going on is fantastic."
Despite holding the role as reserve driver, under current restricting testing rules it is unlikely that Brendon will drive a Formula One car until after the final race of the season. "That's the problem with F1 at the moment," he continued. "It's very very limited testing - you have no possibilities to really prepare yourself properly. The rules are changing all the time, so maybe they'll be more possibilities in the future."
