Button: "More luck than judgement"

A surprised Jenson Button was delighted to clinch pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix, having been slower than team-mate Rubens Barrichello for the majority of the weekend so far. The Englishman set a lap in the last knockings of the qualifying session and starts from the front for the third time this year.

"It could have gone very, very wrong," Button admitted in the post-session press conference. "We timed it quite well, I think, but then I had Kubica - who I thought was on an out-lap - so I had to let him past because I thought he was on a timed lap; then he caught me up and then the guys said 'you've got four seconds in the last sector' - four seconds slower than a proper lap time to get across the finish line - so I had to get a gap because I didn't know if he was going to continue, then I think I just got across the line with a couple of seconds to spare, so more luck than judgement on getting out at the end and by far the best lap I've had this weekend."

Although exact fuel loads are to be released later this afternoon by the FIA, Button was satisfied to have beaten team-mate Rubens Barrichello in the third part of the qualifying hour. "All weekend this guy's been tremendous and all the way through qualifying and I found it very difficult to hang on to him on the low fuel," the English championship leader admitted, "but I got the lap on the high fuel so very happy and this was a bit of a surprise in a way. When I heard Shov's voice (Andrew Shovlin, race engineer) when I crossed the finish line and I was on pole it felt pretty good."
