Fernando Alonso was pleased to finish in fifth position in front of his home crowd in Spain on Sunday. After starting eighth on the grid, the Asturias-born driver was able to pass a struggling Felipe Massa in dying moments of the race as the Brazilian's Ferrari struggled with a shortage of fuel.

"It was a great race for us," Alonso said after scoring four points. "We were not too optimistic before the start and our simulations suggested we would finish in 9th or 10th place."
Being the lightest car on the grid to start the Grand Prix, pitting earlier was likely to hand track position to those behind him although a good strategy by the team coupled with the early-race safety car period played into Alonso's hands. "I had a good start and I was up to 6th after the first corner. The car worked really well during the race and then I was able to overtake Massa on the final lap. It was also an interesting race for the fans."
"Today's result and our pace in the race showed the potential and the improvements made to the car, as Fernando's times were very close to those of the front runners," explained Renault managing director Flavio Briatore. "Now we must work hard and keep improving in order to secure strong points for both cars in the races to come."
