'Ferrari will be back' - Button

11 May 2009

Jenson Button confidently believes that Ferrari will soon be back in contention at the forefront of the F1 field, despite a lacklustre performance in the Spanish Grand Prix. The Scuderia, reigning constructors' Champions, scored three points at the weekend but clearly showed improved pace with an aerodynamics upgrade.

Although Kimi Räikkönen retired and Felipe Massa lost two places with a shortage of fuel in the closing stages at the Circuit de Catalunya, the Ferrari F60 was clearly a quicker package in Barcelona than at the first four season-opening 'flyaway' race meetings. "Ferrari are closing very, very quickly," said Button, winner from four of five races so far. "They've been competitive and they're one to watch over the next few races, for sure."

The red cars have suffered - and continue to do so - from driver and team errors as well as technical glitches in 2009, although raw pace is on the up. "I don't know that anyone has really gone that much quicker this weekend except Ferrari," the championship leader continued. "I think we have the legs on them at the moment; if you had the classification of the improvements, probably Ferrari would be at the top of the list because they have done a good job. I'm surprised."
