Brawn insists: No team orders at Brawn GP

12 May 2009

Ross Brawn has stressed that there were no team orders at Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix. Brawn reacted following driver Rubens Barrichello's questioning over the team's motives to change the pit-stop strategy of team-mate Jenson Button, effectively gifting the Englishman victory in Barcelona.

Having spent six seasons as number two driver to Michael Schumacher at Ferrari, the Brazilian has so far enjoyed his equal status since joining Brawn, formerly Honda. "We don't have a one and a two driver," team owner Brawn confirmed to BBC Radio 5 Live. "They're both on equal terms and conditions."

Brawn continued to describe the media overreaction of events in Barcelona that "once he (Barrichello) got back and we talked things through he was fine." He continued: "Rubens is a great team player. Everyone is working so well together and Rubens and Jenson recognise that; the fact we have such a great atmosphere drives us on and we don't want to lose that.

"We've been completely honest with the drivers - they know the situation and their engineers know that, there's no favouritism. Our plan is to give both drivers both equal opportunity unless there is a mathematical chance one can't do it," Brawn admitted, referring to the possibility of either Barrichello or Button winning the F1 title.

"If one driver can do it and one can't, then we would have to focus on that driver."
