Ecclestone: Donington could be postponed until 2011

12 May 2009

Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has said he is put off the British Grand Prix for one season if the revamp of Donington Park is not completed in time for 2010's race. Ecclestone - of Formula One Management (FOM) - did rule out staging the race at Silverstone again, however.

"If the work at Donington is not finished in time, we would be happy to skip a year," the F1 supremo told The Times. "I don't want to lose the British Grand Prix — that's the last thing we want to do - but we aren't going to Silverstone, for sure."

Ecclestone is positive about the plans at Donington, though, which hosted its only Grand Prix to date in 1993. He said: "I think they are getting their act together, getting things up and running;  the debt (leaseholders' owings to circuit owners of £2.47m) will be sorted out - it's not a problem and raising money from the banks is looking positive."
