Monaco diamonds for Hamilton and Kovalainen

14 May 2009

The McLaren team will be linking up again with Steinmetz diamonds for next weekend's Monaco Grand Prix, as its drivers look to shine on track more than usual. The partnership first started in 2005, when race winner Kimi Räikkönen took the chequered flag for the English team with a diamond-encrusted helmet onboard.

Since the launch of the sponsorship deal, the cars' steering wheels have also featured Mercedes logos of diamonds although it is helmets to be modified for 2009. The personalised designs will feature the numbers 1 and 2, in diamonds, for drivers Lewis Hamilton and Heikki Kovalainen.

"Vodafone McLaren Mercedes are delighted to announce the continuation of their successful partnership with Steinmetz," said team principal Martin Whitmarsh. "Being creators of the world's finest diamonds, Steinmetz fit particularly well in our world-class partner portfolio and we are looking forward to a long and productive cooperation with them."

"I think every Formula 1 driver really cares about the design on their crash helmet," added World Champion Hamilton. "My helmet is yellow because my dad wanted to be able to see me clearly when I was karting and I was on the far side of the circuit, he wanted to know that I was all right. I've hardly changed the colour scheme of my helmet since then and I really love it. The Steinmetz diamond number one I'll be wearing in Monte-Carlo next weekend is a fantastic way to commemorate the most prestigious race on the Formula 1 calendar, and my favourite racetrack in the world. I want to say thank you to Steinmetz for creating this amazing design - I think it looks incredible."
