Alonso concerned for F1 career

21 May 2009

Fernando Alonso admits that he has doubts over the future of his career in Formula One as arguments continue over the proposed budget cap for the 2010 season. The Spaniard, World Champion of 2005 and 2006, is keen to learn of the outcome for the situation as several teams threaten a departure from the sport.

With Friday 29 May the entry deadline for next season, a number of teams - not least constructors' Champions Ferrari - remain in talks of exits from F1 as governing body the FIA insists that the £40m budget cap option will remain ahead of next year.

"It is very worrying," Oviedo's Alonso said in Monte-Carlo. "I have tried to switch off and concentrate on this business, but it is true that last week - when I was at home - it was impossible to switch off because I don't know if this will be my last time in Monaco; if the big teams and the big manufacturers leave F1 then I don't want to race with small teams because it would not be F1 anymore and there are many other categories."

At present Toyota, Red Bull and Renault have taken similar views to Ferrari although a selection of outfits are also lining up to enter the championship for the first time next season. "For me, it is strange that no-one sat down and thought how we are damaging the sport and how much damage the sport has had in the last two months," Alonso continued. "To gain those three or four new teams but lose seven of the big manufacturers, I cannot understand; and not just losing seven manufacturers but losing the ten best drivers in the world - F1 would become less interesting."
