Miserable Thursday for BMW

21 May 2009 / Results / Photos

The BMW team was distinctly downcast after a torrid Thursday of practice in Monte-Carlo. The white cars, running again without KERS, suffered with brake problems in the first session before an engine failure for Robert Kubica resulted with the completion of no more than a single lap in the afternoon.

With setup work on the Bridgestone Soft and Super Soft compounds hindered as a result of the lack of running time for Kubica, the Pole remained realistic having walked back to the paddock from Casino Square. "Today was extremely disappointing," he said plainly. "We clearly lack outright performance and, due to the engine failure in the second session, I had far too little track time. There is nothing to add."

Team-mate Nick Heidfeld may have racked up more mileage in Monaco but the German fell victim to traffic as well as an underperforming F1.09 car. "After brake problems on both cars in the morning, the second session was okay for me," he said, having finished the day in 17th place. "On the long runs I was lucky, in terms of traffic, but it was the opposite when I was on new tyres towards the end of the session; I lost time when I was stuck behind other cars but, even without this, it doesn't look as if this circuit is good for our cars. We will keep working on it."
