Budget cap to be delayed until 2012?
23 May 2009A paddock rumour in Monaco is suggesting that the FIA's imposed £40m budget cap, due to take action for the first time next year, may in fact be delayed for another two seasons. The Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA) met on the yacht of Flavio Briatore in Monte-Carlo on Friday with now just six days remaining until the deadline for entries to next year's World Championship.

With Toyota, Red Bull, Renault and Toyota having made exit threats from Formula One in the event of no lift of the cap, USF1 became the second team to submit its entry on Saturday after GP2 team Campos (two outfits keen to see the budget cap) the day before.
A whisper in the air in Monaco, however, came when Germany's Auto Motor und Sport reported that the cap may in fact be put back to 2012 in an attempt to secure the futures of the teams currently threatening a departure. On top of this, the FIA could be allowing teams to use customer chassis, bought and paid for from other teams; it was the banning of this allowance which saw Prodrive withdraw its 2008 entry as well as being a catalyst for the demise of Super Aguri later in the season.
