Hamilton admits mistake

Lewis Hamilton was quick to put up his hands and admit that an unforced driving error put him into the Mirabeau wall and out of qualifying ahead of Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix. The World Champion, who won in Monte-Carlo last year, will have a challenging race from sixteenth on the grid in 2009.

With an MP4-24 clearly quicker in Monaco practice than in Barcelona a fortnight ago, both Hamilton and Finnish team-mate Heikki Kovalainen were looking strong for a return to the top five on the grid this weekend. As the latter wound up seventh, Hamilton was disappointed to have had to walk back to the paddock from the far side of the circuit after dropping the car at Mirabeau.

"My race weekend for a win is for sure over," he told the BBC during the conclusion of the qualifying hour. "I just don't know what I was thinking - I made a mistake. It had been going well all weekend; I apologise to the team for wasting their time and at least Heikki is doing well - he is up there, I wish him all the best. Tomorrow I will do the best job I can to try and recover from it.

"It's just been tough, but you learn from these mistakes and they are bound to happen. It's unfortunate it happened in the first part of qualifying but this is what makes you stronger."
