Hard afternoon for BMW

24 May 2009 / Results / Photos

BMW Sauber experienced one of its most difficult afternoons of the season at the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday. With both cars having qualified for only the tenth row of the grid on Saturday, Nick Heidfeld eventually fought up to eleventh position as team-mate Robert Kubica retired in the pit lane.

After suffering from large brake difficulties in qualifying, both cars continued to struggle in the race with more issues for Kubica although Heidfeld was fortunate to escape contact with Lewis Hamilton's McLaren. "I tried to make up positions at the start and on the first lap but this time it just didn't work out," Nick said. "It is too narrow here - I was stuck behind Adrian (Sutil) for quite a while. In Turn 1 Lewis hit me but I was happy I was able to continue".

"We had difficulties over the entire weekend," confirmed Kubica, who eventually stopped. "I had a problem at the start and fell to the back of the grid, then I had a puncture on my right-rear tyre; after the necessary pit stop I was lapping well with a very heavy car, but in the end I had to retire as I had brake problems."
