Richards and Prodrive holding station

28 May 2009

David Richards is waiting until the last moments to submit an entry to the 2010 World Championship. Owner of Prodrive, Richards may enter next year with the Aston Martin marque but is waiting until the final opportunity before Friday's deadline as the outcome of Wednesday's FOTA meeting still remains unknown.

With the FIA's proposed £40m budget cap designed to both assist current teams and encourage new arrivals to Formula One, Prodrive - which withdrew an entry to the 2008 championship amid the customer car row - is keen to see the initiative stay in place. With four current teams having threatened an exit due to the scheme, however, the Banbury-based outfit is in no rush to go ahead immediately.

"We already have the chassis designed and have started working on the infrastructure," 56-year-old Richards, who formed the company with Ian Parry in 1984, told Germany's Auto Motor und Sport.

He went on to admit that the company is now waiting for the final results from Wednesday's discussions to know whether or not the new rules will remain in place: "We are watching closely too see what happens. Only shortly before the entry deadline for the 2010 season is when (providing the cap and new regulations are in place) we will see Prodrive/Aston Martin join the line-up."
