Howett considers Toyota future

02 June 2009

John Howett has echoed the sentiments of Ferrari's Stefano Domenicali by touching upon the possibilities of the Toyota team searching for alternative arrangements other than Formula One, in the event of the FIA not lifting its £40m budget cap for next season.

With all nine FOTA (with Williams still suspended) teams having submitted conditional entries to the 2010 World Championship, the group has stated that all applications will be considered invalid in the event of the budget cap remaining in place by the time the governing body releases the full line-up next Friday.

"We believe that everybody has to compete under the same rules," Toyota F1 president Howett, also vice chairman for FOTA, told The Daily Express. As things stand, entrants would be presented with the option of taking the cap and consequently awarded with greater technical freedom although FOTA has expressed its dissatisfaction over the scheme, which could result in two sets of technical rules being in place during the season.

"I don't believe that anybody objects to new teams joining the series," Howett assured, with Campos, USF1, Lola, Prodrive and Superfund waiting in the wings. "I don't think, at the moment, that there is any discussion of a budget cap; a number of us feel that, unless the actual conditions are satisfied, we have to seriously consider alternatives."
