'A rather complicated day' for Ferrari

Ferrari saw a day of fluctuating performances in Turkey on Friday, with drivers Felipe Massa and Kimi Räikkönen eventually finishing up in eleventh and fifteenth positions. With track conditions changing constantly, though, the Scuderia's contenders had fallen from fifth and seventh in the morning practice session.

Istanbul will prove a real test for most teams' general car performances after the generally inaccurate readings, aerodynamic-wise, at the unique venue of Monaco a fortnight ago. "It was a rather complicated day, because of the track conditions - it being dirty and also because of the wind," admitted team manager Chris Dyer. "We got through our programme without the slightest problem, concentrating on tyre choice for the race, finding the best setup on the car and on evaluating new aerodynamic solutions which are making their track debut today."

Felipe Massa, unbeaten in Turkey at the wheel of a Ferrari, was the team's leading driver in both sessions. "Everyone is very close in performance terms so I think we'll have to wait until tomorrow morning to understand something," said the Brazilian runner-up of last year. "The harder tyres (Hard Bridgestone compound) give little grip, as we expected, while the softer ones (Soft Bridgestone compound) seems to suffer significant degradation, even though, as the track evolves, that situation should change."

"There is still work to do on the car but I am confident," added team-mate Kimi Räikkönen, who has remained realistic on the team's performances since the beginning of the season. "I think we will find the right solutions to be competitive tomorrow and on Sunday."
