Massa: "I'm a Ferrari driver"

05 June 2009

Felipe Massa has vowed to retain his commitment to Ferrari amid the current disagreement between FOTA and the FIA. With his team still part of an exit threat at the end of the season, the Brazilian has promised to follow his contract which, in its current state, is not set to expire until the end of next year.

Ferrari is one of ten current teams threatening to leave Formula One unless the FIA lifts its proposed €45m budget cap for next year; Massa remains calm over the matter, however, stating that he will not break away from the Italian marque. "I'm a Ferrari driver," he said in Turkey on Thursday. "I have another year of contract with the team so I hope the team will be in Formula One; if the team is not in Formula One I have no idea - first of all we need to understand how Formula One is going to be without Ferrari and without some other teams."

All current teams bar Williams refuse to stand down from their stance within FOTA (Formula One Teams Association), although FIA president Max Mosley has been just as resolute in his quest to lower the overall running costs of the sport. "I think it's impossible to think now," the 2008 runner-up went on. "We need to wait and see what the decision is.

"If Ferrari is not here, maybe I will have a one-year holiday or drive in another championship, I don't know - we need to wait and see; I hope things will be okay, because Formula One without important teams would be very different, not nice for the sport - I really hope things will be okay."
