Alonso searching for half a second
07 June 2009 / Results / PhotosFernando Alonso may have been disappointed but remained realistic after scoring eleventh position in the Turkish Grand Prix. Having started eighth on the grid, points appeared to be a possibility although a low-key race left the Spaniard's Renault finishing over a minute behind race winner Jenson Button.

Despite being the leading Renault in Istanbul, Alonso finished outside the top ten with cars of six other teams quicker in terms of raw pace. "It's the position we deserve," Alonso told Spain's La Sexta. "When you are so slow there is nothing you can do; if you start with a heavy fuel load you start at the back and if you go light you lose the positions in the race.
"We need changes - what we need is to go half a second quicker and then any strategy will work. I would welcome any new components; we have been using the same car since Bahrain, we are getting worse and worse and until we introduce a part that improves the car it will be hard."
As a result of today's race, Renault now loses out in the constructors' championship. "We are the seventh team now and we are aware of that," Fernando, World Champion of 2005 and 2006, added. "We are going to keep working to try and make up the lost ground."
