New helmet design for Hamilton

17 June 2009

Lewis Hamilton will be sporting a modified helmet design for the British Grand Prix. Like Nick Heidfeld and compatriot Jenson Button, the World Champion's design will be a one-off special for his home Grand Prix and keeping up with national pride by featuring his usual yellow livery 'peeled' back to reveal the flag of Great Britain.

Like championship leader Button, the Union Jack will be shown on Hamilton's helmet as the McLaren driver's design is altered for the second time this year, having been diamond encrusted for the Monaco Grand Prix. The change also marks the first to Hamilton's full yellow scheme, used since his early karting races at the age of eight.

"I'm really proud to be a British driver in a British team racing in front of the British crowd," said 24-year-old Lewis, who won at home last season. "I wanted to choose a design that not only showed that I am a British sportsman but, more importantly, recognised all the support I get from the fans at Silverstone.

"Last year, I remember standing on the grid and just looking out at all the faces in the crowd and flags and banners; it was a really special moment and in the closing laps I could see the fans on the banking going crazy, waving flags and banners on every lap. Racing at Silverstone is special - the British fans are special and I'm really looking forward to seeing them again."
