Female driver hopes for F1 test

18 June 2009

Switzerland's Natacha Gachnang is eyeing up chances of a test with the Campos team ahead of the Spanish outfit making its Formula One debut next year. Gachnang, currently competing in the Formula Two championship and racing in the Czech Republic this weekend, remains in contact with Campos having driven for the team last year.

After competing for Campos in the Spanish Formula 3 championship of 2008, Gachnang - who has made history by becoming the first ever female F2 driver - now has her sights set on being F1's sixth woman entrant since the formation of the World Championship in 1950, with the last to race being Lella Lombardi in 1975.

"I have been speaking to Adrian Campos (team owner) about a test drive," Natacha said at Brno, this weekend's Formula 2 venue. "It is certainly a possibility and he believes in me as a driver after our time together in Spanish F3 last year. For me, it would be an historic moment to be the next woman in F1; many people have said it is not possible, so it would be fantastic to prove them wrong.

"That said, the most important thing for me has always been to be fast. At the end of the day, if I am not quick then I will not make it; for that reason, my main objective this season is to perform well in Formula Two. For sure, the prospect of a test seat with Campos adds a bit of motivation but I have always been motivated to do my best and am always comparing myself to the best and fastest drivers."
