It has been confirmed that a brake failure caused Adrian Sutil's crash in British Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday afternoon. The Force India driver, who went off the circuit at the 80mph Abbey chicane, skipped across the gravel trap before suffering from a heavy impact with the tyre wall.

With Sutil recognising the problem and over-correcting the car due to the resultant increased speed in the braking area, the German flew off the circuit in the same area as his retirement from the race last year. "I had a brake problem and then had no brakes going into the complex," he recalled. "I pushed on the pedal but there wasn't anything; I tried to avoid a big accident, but it was impossible so I crashed really hard."

Fortunately, with some debris flying over the safety fences, nobody was hurt as a result of the incident, including the driver. "I'm completely okay," Sutil confirmed. "I was just taken to the medical centre for some checks, as it was a big crash."
