Williams fastest in final practice

Williams fastest in final practice

20 June 2009 / Results

Nico Rosberg has continued his record of setting a fastest practice time on all race weekends so far this year by topping the timesheets at Silverstone on Saturday morning. After Red Bull dominated on Friday, the Williams team locked out the top two places with Jarno Trulli's Toyota in third. 'Man Friday' Sebastian Vettel finished fourth for Red Bull Racing.

With third and final practice getting underway at 10am at Silverstone, air temperatures reached highs of only 14°C (57°F), leaving crowds with their coats firmly on. After early morning showers, no flying lap time were set until well after the 20-minute point at the English track as drivers experimented with Intermediate tyres. With the cool surface drying, several men toured the track slowly in a bid to avoid destroying their Intermediates before switching to Slicks later in the session.

Rosberg's best effort of 1.18.899 is the only sub-1.19.000 so far the weekend, finishing just over two tenths quicker than his Japanese team-mate; it was a productive session for Williams, which completed more laps than any other team. Behind the top two, Jarno Trulli's Toyota set the third fastest time ahead of Sebastian Vettel's Red Bull, which finished ahead in both Friday sessions.

Ferrari made a big jump up from 17th and 18th places at the end of Friday to fifth and sixth on Saturday morning as Glock, Alonso, Webber and the first Brawn of Rubens Barrichello rounded out the top ten. For British honours, reigning Champion Lewis Hamilton and current championship leader Jenson Button finished in tamdem in 11th and 12th places, although - judging from performances so far - the latter's championship lead looks likely to be shortened at his home race. Sébastien Buemi did well to complete 11 laps, having been rooted to the pit lane for much of the session.

Qualifying at Silverstone will get underway at 1pm local time (BST / GMT+1) and will be followed live on GPUpdate.net.
