Teams still in talks with Mosley, says Ecclestone

21 June 2009

Bernie Ecclestone has explained that the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) remains in talks with the FIA after Friday's news that the former is to create a breakaway championship at the end of the season. Ecclestone, commercial rights holder for the sport, also feels that many opinions of the teams are shared by sport's governing body.

With no agreement being found between FOTA and the FIA with regards to the proposed €45m spending limit, Ecclestone explained how Mosley, as FIA president, is naturally involved in such conflict. "Everyone is talking to each other all the time," said the head of Formula One Management (FOM) to BBC Radio 5 Live. "People have their own ideas about what should happen but there's enough time until next year - I have no problems with anyone, but Max has got himself into this position because he wants to bring down the costs; so rather than wait for that to happen, he introduced the budget cap - he's the president of the FIA, he has to be part of it."

Although the conflict continues between the two parties, Brawn CEO Nick Fry explained that each team has spokon with the FIA one-by-one at Silverstone, as Ecclestone remains confident that peace will eventually be found. "I think the teams will get a lot of what they want; they need a good, stable governing body - in fact, the federations (in sport) never tend to be popular."

What consequences does Ecclestone see teams facing in the event of the breakaway going ahead? "Legally a lot of trouble, but nothing's stopping them," he admitted. "All they are saying is that they want to have a bit more of a say in the regulations. I'd be surprised if there was a breakaway, but it is still possible."
