'Nice' to be catching Jenson

22 June 2009

Sebastian Vettel and Rubens Barrichello were pleased to have begun reeling in Jenson Button's large championship lead at the British Grand Prix. Having won six of the season's first seven races and never yet been headed in the championship, Button's advantage over Barrichello has now been reduced to twenty-three points, with Vettel a further two behind.

Having beaten Jenson Button in both qualifying and the race for the first time this year at Silverstone, Rubens Barrichello was pleased to have made a three-point inroad into his team-mate's still very healthy lead. "He was on a roll," Brazilian Barrichello said. "It's almost as if everything was opening right up in front of him and he used that for him very well, there's nothing to say against that.

"We are sportsmen and if you can make that into a turnaround and work for yourself with the energy and try to get everything for you, you're doing very well. I think Jenson is quite mature already, so he's going to be strong. It's not that I think that with one sixth place he can 'flick it up', I think everything that we're going to conquer towards the end of the season we're going to conquer - he's not going to give us any opportunity, but that's why it's nice and I think it's a good challenge.

Race winner at Silverstone on Sunday was Sebastian Vettel for Red Bull, visiting his second top podium step of the season, having already done so in China. "In the end I can only confirm what Rubens says, you know," said the German, who will celebrate his 22nd birthday next Friday. "When it comes to me, I'm not really a fan of all these psychological tricks and mindset and so on. All I try to do is to squeeze the car out every single time, every single lap and to do the best I can.

"Of course, sometimes you might have to attack more than is probably good for you and you might risk a lot and sometimes lose it. Yes, it happens, I think that happens in sports - that happens in motor racing and I think that's human. As I said, in the end you have to use every single day you have and the one who is most consistent and has done the best job fully deserves to win in the end - it might be a one-point advantage or a fifty points' advantage to the guy behind.
