FOTA planning 'better entertainment'

25 June 2009

The Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) has said that it is working hard to develop plans to ensure Formula One is brought back to the people. Having reached a compromise with the FIA this week to stay in F1, the group is now pushing to ensure that the sport is 'spiced up' in order to cater for the fans first.

With the possible FOTA split from Formula One removed on Wednesday, the FIA's compromise with the former will see the governing body's president, Max Mosley, seperate from the role at the end of his term. As a consequence, with FOTA now fully onboard for 2010 and beyond, those involved are keen to develop plans to ensure the entertainment factor of F1 is dealt with first.

"Flavio (Briatore, head of FOTA's working group for commercial development) will be busy working with the commercial rights holder (Bernie Ecclestone, of Formula One Management) to improve the show of the sport - we hope we can find agreement in the coming days," FOTA chairman Luca di Montezemolo explained to Reuters.

With no figure now in place for a budget cap but teams aiming to reduce spending to 1990 levels, FOTA is particularly eager to see fans' wishes addressed, such as retaining popular circuits. "What we want is a Formula One and in the end we achieved that," Renault's Briatore continued. "We want to work for a better show, better entertainment. We need to talk about sport again.

"After many years of Max Mosley being FIA president, we want to wish him a good retirement." On top of this, FOTA vice chairman John Howett has also noted that the group is looking for a neutral replacement for Mosley as FIA president.
