Williams optimistic for FOTA return

25 June 2009

The Williams team is anticipating a return to the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) after the news on Wednesday that a compromise has been found between the group and F1 governing body the FIA. With Williams one of two teams currently suspended, the Grove-based squad now hopes to be involved in FOTA meetings once again.

With Williams suspended by FOTA on 27 May, the team claimed that - against the wishes of the party - it was forced to submit a full and unconditional entry to the FIA for joining the 2010 World Championship due to contractual obligations. With the assemblage now at peace and all current teams joining next year's campaign, however, Williams is looking to once again be part of team discussions in order to help mould a secure future for the sport.

"I do hope so," said team CEO Adam Parr. "I think that's something we'd all like to see; it's essential that we, along with Force India and the new teams, are part of the discussions going forward. At the weekend I outlined Williams' position, that we were optimistic a solution would be found and doubtful of the real merits of an alternative series, so we are absolutely delighted with the outcome.

"The teams, the FIA and FOM (Formula One Management, commercial rights holders for F1 and headed by Bernie Ecclestone) have committed to a cost-saving programme that means the sport is stronger and better set up for the future than it has been for several years."
