Herbert weighs up NASCAR options

29 June 2009

Ex-Grand Prix driver Johnny Herbert is electing whether to join the American NASCAR series after the Speedcar championship - in which the Englishman was participating - folded this week. After clinching the Speedcar title in 2008 but being beaten by Gianni Morbidelli this year, Johnny is now preparing for a new challenge.

Last seen driving in F1 for Jaguar in 2000, Herbert returned to the sport as sporting director for the Midland team in 2006. He remains one of motorsport's most popular figures and was delighted to have been crowded Champion in last year's Speedcar Series. With the Middle Eastern championship now defunct due to financial reasons, however, Romford's Herbert is considering a drive on the other side of the world.

"I've always wanted to have a go at NASCAR," Autosport was told by Herbert, who celebrated his 45th birthday last Thursday. "I've been looking at it for a couple of years now; I enjoyed Speedcar so I'm hoping that I' going to like driving a stock car on an oval too. I know I can't just waltz in and say 'I'm an ex-Formula One driver, give me a drive' - you've got to try to put a deal together and get a bit of sponsorship to make it happen."
