Glock remaining bright over chances

01 July 2009

Timo Glock refuses to doubt the likelihood that the Toyota team can clinch a maiden Grand Prix victory this season and remains optimistic about his car's performance. Having had a strong start to the year before slipping back slightly, the German believes that there is still more performance to be drawn from the TF109.

Now in his second full season of Formula One, Glock's highlights of the year so far include a third place finish in Malaysia and holding the lead in the opening stint of the Bahrain Grand Prix. With Toyota finally looking likely to steal a victory in the early races of 2009, however, the Cologne-based team has since been caught by rivals and sunk more into the middle and bottom half of the top ten and with fewer peaks out of it.

"I was always careful about talking about the first win," Glock admitted when speaking with Autosport. "I always said we had to concentrate on developing the car race-by-race and that's still my opinion. Sure, at the moment we have maybe slightly lost pace to the top two teams but there is a chance to be up there at every race."

Now in its eighth F1 season, Toyota looked to follow a Kaizen-like trend of making gradual progress but has suffered from particularly dismal seasons in 2004, 2006 and 2007 before recovering pace towards the end of last year. "We have made a good step from 2008 to 2009," confirmed 27-year-old Timo, who currently lies eighth in the standings. "Okay, we have different tyres and a different aerodynamic configuration, but I would say that the car is better in every area.

"It has better stability; you can drive the car more aggressively and not have to pick a window where it is working. Last year, when you lost the car, you lost it quite unpredictably - we'd already improved on that already last year and we have made more improvements this year." Timo is now looking forward to his home Grand Prix at the Nürburgring next weekend.
