Plans progressing for Bulgarian Grand Prix

03 July 2009

The nation of Bulgaria is planning to host its first ever Formula One race in 2011. The south-eastern European country, which began discussions with F1 commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone last year, is confident that it is now on the verge of signing an agreement.

With race organisers due to meet with the head of Formula One Management (FOM) at the German Grand Prix, the Bulgarian Motorcycling Federation (BMF) chief is confident that a deal can be struck. "We submitted our plan a few months ago and it was considered by Formula One Management," Bogdan Nikolov explained to Reuters.

"According to the draft, Bulgaria could sign a contract to host a Formula One race between 2011 and 2015 and there's an option for a contract extension until 2020."
BMF has already confirmed to host a MotoGP round at the venue between 2012 and 2016, as Bulgaria looks to make its first steps into the motor racing world.
