Button on top form, admits Webber

07 July 2009

Mark Webber has admitted that any failure for Jenson Button to clinch this year's World Championship will be due to a lack of performance from the Brawn team as opposed to the driver. Webber, currently fourth in the standings, believes that the Englishman's consistency must be broken immediately for any other driver to clinch the 2009 title.

Six wins from the first eight races signals a dominant first half to the 2009 World Championship for Jenson Button, although Red Bull Racing's outscoring of Brawn GP at the last two Grands Prix warns of the biggest threat to the leaders from Brackley.

"I don't see Button losing the fight himself," Australian Webber told the BBC. "He's been so impressively consistent and just doesn't make mistakes - if he loses the title now, it will be down to a problem from the team, not him." The 32-year-old Queanbeyan-born pilot also added that, in order for Button to be knocked from the top of the table, several poor races would be required for the Briton.

"I want to play my role in the team as we aim to close down Jenson Button and Brawn's lead in the championships and when Sebastian (Vettel) has made mistakes I've been there to take points for the team," Mark continued, also stressing that no team orders are currently in place at Red Bull. "I think we all know we can take it too them in the constructors' championship; it's doable - they are on the front foot, no question about it, but we still have a lot to play for."
