Renault hoping to retain Alonso

10 July 2009

The Renault team has said that it will be attempting to hold onto driver Fernando Alonso next year. The former double World Champion, who is currently being heavily linked with Ferrari in rumours which constantly fail to dissipate, returned to the French team at the start of last year.

With Alonso having won both the 2005 and 2006 World Championships before narrowly missing out again during an unhappy and controversial year at McLaren in 2007, the Spaniard rejoined Renault last year. With gossip long having surrounded the driver with regards to a move to Maranello, however, the French has expressed its desire to keep the driver, who will turn 28 on the Wednesday after the Hungarian Grand Prix.

"As far as I'm concerned, he will be driving a Renault next year," Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn told Spanish reporters at the Nürburgring on Thursday. "We must ask the question but, for me, he'll be driving a Renault."
