1980 World Champion Alan Jones enjoyed seeing Mark become the first Australian driver since himself to win a Grand Prix on Sunday. One of only three men from the country to have taken victory in an F1 race, 32-year-old Webber joins Jones and Jack Brabham in a unique club.
Of the sixteen Australian drivers to have participated in the Formula One World Championship, Brabham - three-time World Champion of 1959, 1960 and 1966 - clinched his first race win for Copper in '59 and his '66 record of being the only man to have win the title in his own car still stands.

| Jones' win for Williams in Las Vegas in 1981 was the last for an Australian until Webber's success |
Jones, the first Williams World Champion, was the last Australian before Webber to win a race and did so in Las Vegas in 1981, the year of his title defence; therefore Webber's win for Red Bull in Germany has ended an 18-year victory draught for Australia. "To see Mark win his first Grand Prix and be one of only three Australians who have done so is just great," said Jones, who is now boss of Australia's A1 Grand Prix team. "Hopefully he can become the third Australian to win a World Championship in the near future.
"Mark has been in something like 130 Grands Prix and - while he has led races in the past - he hasn't been able to convert it to a win, often through no fault of his own. So it is great to see him break through for the win and I am sure it isn't going to be the last - it will give him a big confidence boost for the rest of the year."
