'He's too young' - Massa on Alguersuari

24 July 2009

Felipe Massa believes that Formula One new boy Jaime Alguersuari should have delayed making his first appearance in the sport. Whereas the Spaniard is keen to enter and learn as soon as possible, Massa believes that - from his own experiences - rushing is no solution.

Alguersuari will make history this weekend by becoming the youngest driver ever to grace a Formula One grid as he steps into the cockpit of Toro Rosso number 11 at the age of 19. "For me, he's too young," Brazilian Massa said on Thursday. "When I came into Formula One I was just 20 and for me it was also quite young - I was too inexperienced to ask for what I needed from the car, so I made some mistakes."

Felipe's first year was not unimpressive however, scoring points on three occasions for Sauber in 2002. "For sure, I had a very difficult car to drive but, anyway, it was not easy for me," he continued. "Even for myself, and I can say it was too early for me, I did the whole winter so I did many tests in Formula One; he's never driven a Formula One car, or he has only driven it in a straight line or whatever. For me it's wrong, it's not good for him.

"Maybe he's an incredible talent, and he will do much better than everybody thinks, but for me it's not good for him - I'm surprised a team would just put a guy in the car like that."
