Back of grid for rookie Alguersuari

25 July 2009

Jaime Alguersuari was disappointed to be starting Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix from the back of the grid after a throttle problem in qualifying on Saturday. As the Spaniard - the youngest ever driver in F1, at 19 - starts from the back, team-mate Sébastien Buemi qualified an impressive eleventh fastest.

After finishing ahead of both Force India cars in final practice and being within two seconds of Friday's best times, the reigning British Formula 3 Champion has already made a big impression in F1. "Finishing qualifying with a failure is never good - I had a problem with the throttle control system," he explained. "We have to be content because I haven't made any mistakes so far this weekend.

"On my first two sets of tyres I did a good job. As for the race, I am really looking forward to it and I will be happy if I finish." His team-mate's performance must not be overlooked, however, even if Buemi's 11th quickest time was aided by drivers slowing down under yellow flags for Felipe Massa's accident.

"Finishing 11th, one tenth off P10, shows we have made progress, a very big step forward since the last race," said the Swiss driver. "It was a good qualifying for us, even if it is frustrating to finish eleventh because you want Q3! It means we can run whatever fuel load we want for the race and I think we will be in good shape for tomorrow."
