Performance race starts here, says Horner

28 July 2009

With McLaren being the first team other than Brawn or Red Bull to win a race this season and four different constructors in the top four places in Hungary, Christian Horner expects a final seven races of varied results for all teams as track layouts and weather conditions throw variables into the mix.

With Sebastian Vettel out of the race in Budapest on Sunday but Mark Webber in third, Red Bull continued to close the gap on leaders Brawn GP and Jenson Button in both championships. "This was never going to be our best circuit and there are more players coming into the game now," Horner explained following the race in Hungary. "There is the step that McLaren has made, I think Renault has also made a step and Williams, in fairness - their car also looks very promising.

"For us, the best thing is to have the most cars between us and Brawn as we possibly can." That is exactly what could prove the deciding factor when it comes to discovering the outcome of the 2009 campaign as a Williams, McLaren and Toyota were sandwiched between Webber and Button at the end of Sunday's 70 laps, with the Australian closing in on the Englishman by four points and moving to second in the standings at the same time.

"I think, once we get back to more classic tracks, we'll start to see - hopefully - a similar performance from our car (as those in Britain and Germany) and it will be interesting to see where the Brawns are," Christian continued. "I think it will yo-yo, be circuit dependant and there will be some tracks that will really play to the strength of our car; the momentum can change so quickly and the rate of development this year is relentless - whoever gets the most performance to their car the quickest is going to win this championship."
