Ferrari requests Schumacher F60 test

31 July 2009

Ferrari has contacted F1 governing body the FIA as well as all other teams to seek permission for Michael Schumacher to test the 2009 car in Mugello this weekend. With in-season circuit testing banned this year, the German is driving the 2007 model on Friday although the team hopes the run the former Champion in its latest car.

With the in-season suspension on testing having been put into action at the start of the season, teams are - with the exception of limited straight-line aerodynamic tests - limited to running cars only on race weekends. However, with Schumacher re-entering the sport mid-season and not having driven a new era, slick tyre-shod Formula One car, Ferrari has requested an exception to the rule.

A letter - seen by SpeedTV - from Ferrari sporting director Massimo Rivolva is addressed to all other teams plus the FIA and reads as follows:

'Dear All,

As you are all aware, Michael Schumacher has accepted to evaluate the possibility to replace Felipe Massa until he will be able to compete in the championship again. Michael has however been away from F1 racing and from any kind of car racing since 2006, with the exception of a limited amount of testing for us in 2007.

In order to properly evaluate the possibility for his comeback we are therefore herewith requesting all competitors to the 2009 championship, as well as the FIA, for the possibility to perform one day of official testing before the Valencia Grand Prix in derogation to Art. 22.1 c) of the 2009 Sporting Regulations and of the Testing Agreement. We would be grateful if you could confirm your agreement to the aforesaid.

With kind regards,
Massimo Rivola
Sporting Director'
