Di Montezemolo pushing for three-car teams

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo vows not to give in until leading teams are able to run three cars in Formula One. The Italian, who is also chairman of the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA), believes that three cars per team would be a more suitable option than three, if not four, new entrants joining the grid next year.

The relationship between Di Montezemolo, and therefore FOTA, with the new teams has already been strained this year after the Ferrari leader labelled the sport 'Formula GP3' at the height of the FIA/FOTA dispute; with Campos, Manor, USF1 and a likely replacement for BMW filling a total of eight spots on what would be a 26-car grid in 2009, the 61-year-old believes that 3 cars per team would be a more suitable option.

"We will continue to fight until every team has the right to start with three cars next season," he said firmly, with the belief being that Michael Schumacher is a targeted full-time race driver. "I would prefer three McLarens and three Renaults to three 'whatevers'. With BMW gone, there's not much to say but lots to do."
