Newey: 2010 more evolutionary than radical

20 August 2009

Red Bull car designer Adrian Newey believes that changes due for next season will see Formula One technical teams experimenting in a more progressive manner than developing such revolutionary parts as seen in 2009 such as double diffusers. The Englishman talked of the scheduled changes and particularly the ban on mid-race refuelling.

With no refuelling permitted in races without drivers having to face huge time losses, F1 2010 will feature cars with larger fuel tanks in order to accommodate for the amount of petrol needed over the course of an entire Grand Prix distance; as a result, cars will be longer and heavier with a changed physical appearance. In the event of a car having to refuel, drivers will be required to park on a designated spot within the team's garage with the engine switched off.

"The ban on refuelling is primarily a packaging challenge as we have to integrate a fuel tank which is almost double the size of the existing one whilst trying to maintain the basic design of the existing car," Newey explained to the official F1 website, having moved to Red Bull in 2005 after championship-winning stints with Williams and McLaren. "I would consider the RB6 (of 2010) to be more of an evolutionary design rather than a radical departure."

Newey, of Warwickshire's Stratford Upon-Avon and one of few designers to still enjoy the use of a traditional drawing board, went on to explain that the majority of the Red Bull Technology design team is continuing work on its current RB5 racer but added that he particularly enjoys the initial design phase of a car.

How long does he see himself carrying on in the top class of motorsport? "I don't think what happens this year will affect what I do in the future," he replied. "I still tremendously enjoy Formula One but at some stage I would like to be involved in another area outside of motor racing before I reach pension age!"

And finally, which Red Bull driver would Adrian tip for the title this season?

"I'm not a betting man."
