Matter-of-fact Kubica cracks top ten

Robert Kubica was pleased to have achieved a top ten qualifying result in Valencia after successfully passing through to the final round of the qualifying session. With team-mate Nick Heidfeld only one place behind, the Pole is the leading BMW on the grid but remains pragmatic ahead of Sunday's race.

Although tenth would have been a disappointment for Kubica in 2008, as he both qualified and finished third on the Spanish streets, the position generates a rather different feeling this season.

"If lately you have been starting from the rear of the grid, you cannot be disappointed with tenth in qualifying," he explained. "We have to be realistic. I think today, overall, was a good day. Unfortunately, I had some traffic on my final run and I made a small mistake which cost me a few tenths - scoring points will be difficult tomorrow."

Team-mate Heidfeld is confident that BMW-Sauber is on the up with only seven races remaining until the German manufacturer pulls out of Formula One. "It is the sixth time this year that I have just missed the top ten in qualifying and come 11th by fractions of tenths of a second," said the German. "Of course I'm a little bit disappointed but on the other side it means we have freedom regarding the fuel we carry and I hope for a good race."
