Lewis Hamilton was gracious in defeat to Rubens Barrichello after a McLaren pit-stop error handed victory to the Brazilian in the European Grand Prix. Set for an almost certain win from pole position, the World Champion was eventually forced to settle for second place.
Having been stationary in the pits for over 13 seconds, Hamilton fought back late in the race but eventually elected not to risk either his car or chances of finishing on the podium for the second race in succession.
"We win or lose together and they have had a tremendous effort to get us here so we could not at all take second place for granted or be disappointed that we didn't get the win," said the World Champion, who thanked his team for its efforts.
"We have had extraordinary pace for us in the last two or three races and I still feel and believe that there is a tremendous effort from everyone. These things happen and this could only be the second time (to have a pit-stop issue) in all the races I've done; for all they have done they deserve a pat on the back."
