Kubica collects unexpected point

23 August 2009 / Results / Photos

Robert Kubica had stressed that a points finish remained unlikely after qualifying tenth on the grid ahead of the European Grand Prix. However, a strong drive by the Pole fused with a well-organised strategy by the BMW-Sauber team allowed the 2008 championship contender to score his third point of the 2009 campaign on Sunday.

As Rubens Barrichello clinched his first win of the season, it was a reasonable result for Kubica under the circumstances in Spain. "I had to start the race from a very bad position, as I was in the middle of the pack and we were all very close together in the first corners," Robert reported.

"Unfortunately, I was not able to make up positions at the start and I even lost a place to Nick (Heidfeld, team-mate) but then, during the race, my pace was good. Although my stints were shorter, I was even able to overtake Mark Webber during his final pit-stop, which was very good."
