Brazil records 100th Grand Prix win

Rubens Barrichello's victory in the European Grand Prix was significant for a number of reasons; not only did the Brawn GP driver record his tenth Formula One win to bring an end to a near five-year victory draught but the Paulista also ensured that Brazil hit its century of Grand Prix wins, first started by Emerson Fittipaldi 39 years ago.

By winning the first Grand Prix for a Brazilian since Felipe Massa did so in Brazil last year, 100 F1 victories have now successfully been notched up for the country which started winning at Brands Hatch in 1970. "A lot went through my mind," said Barrichello. "I have learnt in 17 years how to be not emotional; I can freeze all my thoughts and just drive and I have been doing that very well.

"Some mistakes at the beginning of my career were because of these emotional thoughts and so on but today was good. I was concentrating but in the last ten laps everything came up in my mind; you hear all the noises, you hear everything and you can see people in the grandstands - it was a tough one but a fantastic one."

Of the six Brazilian men to have won Grands Prix, Barrichello currently stands fifth with only Carlos Pace behind, who won his one and only race at home in 1975. The late Ayrton Senna holds the largest number, with 41 to his name, ahead of fellow triple World Champion Nelson Piquet, double Champion Fittipaldi and Felipe Massa.

"The 100th number is always going to be famous," Barrichello added. "I don't care very much about numbers, I just care about my work and the recognition from my work. Last year people seemed to think that was it for me but now I can show that it wasn't. I have always thought I had it in me. I think I have just reached the peak of my speed, so I have more in me and I hope I can carry on."
