No punishments for first lap pile-up

30 August 2009 / Results / Photos

Belgian Grand Prix race stewards have announced that no penalties will be handed out for the Italian Grand Prix following a multiple collision on the first lap at Spa-Francorchamps. Champion Lewis Hamilton, Romain Grosjean, Jaime Alguersuari and championship leader Jenson Button were all involved in the pile-up.

With the carnage coming at Les Combes, a get-together by Brawn's Button and Renault's Grosjean resulted in the McLaren of Hamilton dodging left, into the path of Alguersuari's Toro Rosso, as all four cars ended up in the barriers.

Having listened to the opinions of all involved and reviewing video evidence, the FIA-appointed stewards elected not to take any further action and therefore hand out no 10-place grid drops ahead of the Italian Grand Prix in two weeks' time.
